Why did you choose Utica University?
I knew that I wanted to attend a college or university that was close to home. Utica offered small class sizes and proximity to my hometown, which made it the perfect fit for me. Utica University has also been a part of my family for decades, so I felt a sense of belongingness that I believe all prospective students can find at Utica!

What is the best thing about your major?
In my experience, both our Health Sciences and Psychology majors allow students to form exceptionally close relationships with their professors. The mentorships that develop from these interactions are crucial to finding your future path in either Health Sciences or Psychology and create a sense of connectedness within your major that greatly improves your time at Utica. All of our students seem to have some experience with this guidance and support, which rightly portrays our faculty as the wonderful people that they are!
What has been the best surprise about being a Utica student?
I did not realize how close students can become with the staff members at Utica University. I expected that relationships with various faculty members would be likely; however, forming relationships with staff members has been such a memorable experience during my years at Utica. These folks are welcoming, kind, and eager to know Utica students to help make their experience the best that it can be.
How has Utica University prepared you for your future career?
The Career Fair held every Spring semester facilitates connections between students and prospective employers. Our faculty members are also a great resource for students planning careers in their respective areas of expertise. Professors are well-connected people, meaning that they can offer information on various fields and even connect students with contacts in areas of their discipline if students are interested. Never be afraid to ask your faculty members if they know professionals who you could speak with!
What is something you wish you knew before starting university?
I wish I had known how simple meeting other students on campus truly is. I could name friends or students that I have had classes with from probably 10 different majors. The small class sizes at Utica allow us to become acquainted with even more of our fellow students, so there is no need to be anxious about meeting new people. Everyone is open to new relationships, and with a little effort, you can meet people with incredibly different backgrounds.
One piece of advice for prospective students is…
These next four years of your life are going to be extremely challenging and incredibly exciting, all at exactly the same time. It is easy to become focused on getting that highest possible test score (which is still important!), but that often comes at the cost of missing opportunities to ask questions and simply admire the field that you have chosen to enter by studying here at Utica. Don't forget to be impressed with your area of interest and the progress you have made in further understanding it. This will keep you coming back every semester!

Why did you choose Utica University?
I chose Utica University because I instantly felt at home. The feeling that I had when touring Utica University was not comparable to any other college tours. I immediately felt that I could be seen and heard at Utica University, with its close-knit community. With an abundance of opportunities, I felt that I could be involved in anything that I desired, and I would not be lost in a large crowd of students. I was drawn in to the small faculty to student ratio, allowing small classes, a variety of clubs and organizations with members that are heard, and the ability to build relationships with professors who have had jobs with degrees in the major that I am pursuing. I chose Utica University because I felt that it is the best environment to grow personally and professionally in.

The library provides a peaceful academic environment with many recourses available to assist in any work.
What is the best thing about your major?
The best thing about my major is the professors. The criminal justice program has some of the best professors who truly care about your wellbeing in and out of the classroom. How has Utica University prepared you for your future career?
Utica University has prepared me for my future by simulating very "job like" experiences. In my Criminal Justice Communications Class, we had a mock crime scene in order to properly and professionally document a crime scene with precise detail, to prepare us for our future work in the criminal justice field. Another one of my classes explored the dark web and how criminals purchase items illegally on it, as well as how people who purchase from the dark web are prosecuted. All of these examples are real life simulations that have helped me develop professionally. Utica University has held me to a high academic and professional standard that has and will continue to prepare me for my future.
What is something you wish you knew before starting university?
Something I wish I knew before starting university was it really does go by fast. It is crazy how fast four years really fly by. I would tell myself to take every opportunity that is presented to me and to never back down from a new experience. That is what university is all about.
One piece of advice for prospective students is…
One piece of advice that I would give to a prospective student is to trust your gut. You will know when you are touring the college that is meant for you. Do not stop searching and touring schools until you feel that feeling. You will know which school is right for you when you feel like it feels like home and makes you excited about your major, future, and just being there on campus. I would advise to prospective students to be patient, and even if you are the last of your class to decide where to further your education, be content in waiting for that gut feeling.

This way you can find the college or university that feels right for you. The college should fit your academic, sports, and social needs. Some things to consider would be: Is there a specialized program in your major? Is there a sport you want to play? Are there options to be in a sorority or fraternity? Does the class size and faculty meet your needs? How was your interaction with students and faculty/staff during your visit? Is this a place you can visualize yourself? And most importantly where do you see yourself thriving and calling the college your second home?

I choose Utica University for there amazing direct entry nursing program, when I first visited and saw the amazing facilities and staff that the nursing student have I was sold. Besides my academics I wanted to continue my athletic carrier and thankfully we have a fantastic Dance team. I also love the size of the campus and the tight community. What activities are you involved with at Utica University?
I am involved with student nurses association and Utica University dance team
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus at the moment is the new Wilcox Center. i love going there and taking advantage of the study rooms either by myself or with friends. Its open 24/7 which is great for those long nights of studying. The white boards in all the rooms are definitely a plus especially as a nursing student, being able to sketch out and write things down is important for me. its also really convenient as its right by the resident's halls so its an easy walk. Not only in the inside incredible but the outside has beautiful seating and a fireplace for those nights where you want to get outside your room and hangout with friends but still be warm.
What is the best thing about your major?
I find the best thing about my major is the nursing staff. Every professor I have had or met is always willing and able to help you be the best student and wants you to succeed in everything you do. They always open their doors to help you after class with material you may need the extra time on or even for nursing students to host an open lab so you can go and practice your skills outside of class time with some extra one on one time. Thankfully with our class sizes being small the one on one time is always a bonus.
What has been the best surprise about being a Utica student?
I think one of the best things that surprised me about being a Utica student is how close everyone is. The amount of love and support on this campus is incredible. I can walk around campus from one side to the other and say hi to almost every person who walks by me with a big smile. Not only on campus but at sporting events everyone comes to support everyone. Being on the dance team, this was the first time i had experienced this and looking out into the crowd of people from the football team to the basketball team to just kids I've seen in my classes before all coming out to events to support one another was one of the best things I've seen.
How has Utica University prepared you for your future career?
Since freshman year Utica has gone above and beyond to prepare me to be a nurse. From making sure i take all my required science courses on time to prepare me for my clinical training to even having me take a public speaking course to allow me to feel comfortable talking to groups of people. As a nurse that's going to be an important skill to have in the field. The staff has also helped me in looking for internships close to home during breaks and helped me build my resume for these positions. They always want every student to be successful in school and in the real world.
What is something you wish you knew before starting university?
Something i wish i knew was to step out of my comfort zone. Go out to campus events and meet new people. Whether you go by yourself or with your roommate even, they are always fun and they usually involve free food or Utica merchandise. Its a good way to get involved with clubs and organizations on campus and have a good time meeting people you might've never seen before. Everyone is super open and friendly, these types of outings were some of the best ways I made my friends freshman year who I still am so close with to this day.
One piece of advice for prospective students is…
Don't let anything hold you back from achieving what you want. University can be stressful for sure. Its a new environment with classes you've never taken before and work loads you've never seen and there maybe times where you feel discouraged or overwhelmed by everything, its totally normal. Sometimes you just need a break to Take that deep breath and tell yourself "i can do it" and stive for greatness.
